March 27th, 2012 Gerry Langeler- Venture Capital- "Take the money and run!"

Gerry Langeler will join us on March 27th to discuss how Venture Capital works.

PRESENTATION : “Take the Money and Run!”

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:

Buoyant economies are built on the back of pioneering entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs who build major enterprises (a là Mentor Graphics) have a vision and a desire to change the world, or at least change how the world works in a given area. They require two things: cash and speed. They need money to build the enterprise (often from institutional investors like OVP) and then they need to build it quickly before an existing competitor can snuff them out.  Venture-backed companies rank among the most successful enterprises ever created (Intel, anyone!), but fewer than 1 in 100 companies approaching venture capitalists ever get to “take the money.”  Through his vast experience as both an entrepreneur and an investor, Gerry points out the approaches that work and the pitfalls to avoid.

SPEAKER BIO:
Since 1992 Gerry Langeler has been a Managing Director with OVP Venture Partners (OVP), the most experienced venture capital firm in the Pacific Northwest. He focuses on investments in the digital energy, software, imaging and digital biology sectors. Prior to joining OVP, Gerry was co-founder of Mentor Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ: MENT) in Portland, OR in 1981. There he served as President, and over eleven years helped lead Mentor through its IPO to over $400M in worldwide sales and over $1B in market capitalization. He began his technology career at Tektronix.

Gerry was elected to and served as School Board Chair of the Riverdale Public School District and also previously chaired the Riverdale School Foundation. He has served as Chair of the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry (OMSI) Board of Trustees, and as Chair of the State of Oregon Facilities Authority – a bonding agency for not-for-profits. In 2011 he was awarded the Oregon Entrepreneurs Network Lifetime Achievement Award.

Gerry is the author of Take the Money and Run! An Insider’s Guide to Venture Capital (Smashwords.com & Lulu Press, 2011) as well as The Vision Trap (Harvard Business Review, 3/92), both of which can be ordered at www.langeler.com. He also authored a chapter in Venture Capital Best Practices (Aspatore Books, 2005) and Great Patents (Logos Books, 2011).

March 14th, 2012 Brother against Brother: Pragmatisim, Civility and the Civil War

Oregon Humanities: Conversation Project

Brother Against Brother:  Pragmatism, Civility and the Civil War

Oregon Historical Society

1200 SW Park Avenue

Portland, OR

Wednesday, March 14, 7PM

April 2011 marked the sesquicentennial of the first shots fired in the American Civil War.  This war changed the way Americans approached disagreement and fostered the birth of the one major American contribution to philosophy: pragmatism.  One hundred and fifty years later, how can the lessons of this national crisis inform the ways we conduct our current debates.  Linfield College associate professor David Sumner will facilitate a discussion that asks how we can look to American pragmatism to help us move past entrenched positions and engage in productive and civil discussions about important issues.

This program is hosted by the Rotary Club of Portland and the Oregon Historical Society and sponsored by Oregon Humanities.  There is no charge for this event.

March 6th, 2012 Greg MacPherson- PERS

Greg MacPherson will speak to us on Tuesday March 6th about PERS: Public Employee's Retirement System.

Gregory Hector "Greg" MacPherson is a Democratic politician in the US state of Oregon. From 2003 to 2009, he served as the state representative from District 38, which includes most of Lake Oswego and portions of southwestern Portland.

Macpherson grew up in rural Linn County. His father, Hector Jr., served in the Oregon State Senate and was a cosponsor of the 1973 law that established Oregon's land-use planning system. His grandfather, Hector Sr., served in the Oregon House of Representatives and helped found the Oregon Department of Education.

Macpherson earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard University in 1972 and his law degree from Georgetown University in 1975. He was admitted to the Oregon bar in 1975. An employee benefits attorney for more than 30 years, he is a currently a partner at Stoel Rives LLP in Portland.

In 2002, Macpherson was elected to the Oregon House of Representatives, defeating Republican Jim Zupancic. He was re-elected in 2004 and 2006. In the Oregon House, he played a prominent role opposing Measure 37, a controversial ballot initiative that invalidated much of Oregon's land use regulation. He was the plaintiff in Macpherson v. Department of Administrative Services, an unsuccessful challenge to Measure 37's constitutionality. As chair of the House Judiciary Committee, he was instrumental in writing Measure 49, a 2007 ballot measure that scaled back some of Measure 37's provisions.

In 2006, Macpherson was one of only three Democrats in the Oregon legislature who urged the PUC to oppose refunding Portland General Electric (PGE) customers who had been illegally overcharged by the utility. Enron, the parent company of PGE, was a client of Macpherson’s law firm.

He was a candidate for Oregon Attorney General in 2008, running to succeed incumbent Hardy Myers, but lost in the Democratic primary to John Kroger. In 2012, Macpherson announced that he would run for mayor of his hometown of Lake Oswego.

What are SolarWorld’s plans for growth at its Hillsboro site, what’s the company’s economic impact in the community, and what kinds of jobs are being created? Additionally, SolarWorld is taking the lead in a federal trade case, alleging that China is illegally dumping of solar panels and cells into the U.S. market.
