07-29-2008 Why Oregonians Wear Cowboy Boots Instead of Shepherd Boots

What is the history of sheep in Oregon, what does it have to do with people nowadays wearing cowboy boots or hats, and what is the connection between the Civil War and the absence of mutton in our shops? Answers to these and other questions will be shepherded into this brief but not too beefy talk.

Born in Scotland, Dr. David Ritchie is a tenured professor of history at Pacific Northwest College of Art. He is currently at work on a compilation of talks, aimed at the general reader and tentatively titled, "Stand Back, I'm a Historian." Ritchie serves as President of the St. Andrew's Society and of the Portland Highland Dancing Association.
